News draught

With training camps just around the corner there is nothing much going on in around the league. Most teams have all the players they need and a few players are still question
marks. The TSN.ca poll today asks: What do you think Scott Niedermayer will do this season? Re-join Ducks, re-join later, take year off, or retire?

I would like to add an option to the poll. Who the hell really cares?

Well, I'm sure quite a few people besides Brian Burke give a bleep seeing how we're talking about one of the two best defenders on the the planet.

Scott Niedermayer has won everything and I mean everything. At the professional level he has a Memorial Cup, a Norris Trophy, a Conn Smythe Trophy, and 1-2-3-4, yes four Stanley Cups. He has also represented Canada and added a few more prizes to his cabinet, namely, a World Junior Gold, Olympic Gold, World Cup Gold, and a gold medal at the 2004 Worlds. A very small group of athletes can match that resumé and that bunch include names like Sakic, Shanahan, Rob Blake, Fetisov, and Larianov.

Of course as a fan of the game it gets a little 'soapy' to keep hearing about his pondering. But is that his fault or the work of the media? Perhaps both.

Personally, I think the game would suffer to lose such a skater and classy captain. Keep in mind, it was Ottawa's captain trying to take his head off with a slapshot a few months ago and not vice versa. Niedermayer should finish his career going for gold at home in Vancouver with fellow British Columbian Joe Sakic.

First of all, I would like to say that I am by no means criticizing Scott Niedermayer or his feats as a hockey player. I am well of aware of his ability and accomplishments in the game, in fact I'm a big fan.

I also have no problem with him taking a long time figuring out whether to play or not. He is obviously searching for motivation, having won everything on the planet.

What I don't get is why you would hold a press conference when you still have no news about the future. Not even Forsberg did that.

About the slapshot comment, I don't even know what you mean by that. You think he's a classy captain for ducking a slapshot?

Lastly, about going for the gold in Vancouver; Good luck with that!

Yep, ha ha, you're right. He did call for a press conference not too long ago to announce to the world he is still undecided about playing but, at the same time, he is certain he will be nowhere near any training camp rinks. Now THAT is retarded!

About ducking slapshots, I don't recall mentioning anyone dodging any slapshots. What I'm talking about is Alfie's cheapshot that took place close to center ice where he, instead of dumping the puck, clearly turned and fired it at Niedermayer who was nowhere near the net mind you. The whole world saw that. I'm in a country where zero hockey is shown so I never saw it myself but I listen to the Toronto stations and one morning they mentioned the Alfie incident and I later found it on the web:

I must admit I was a little surprised at what Alfie did in that game (a long long time ago now), but I also kind of liked it. He finally showed he has a nastier side to him. That aside, he is a great captain who leads with his incredible work ethic. Had he gotten a littler more help from those other show boats, they might have been able to take those Ducks out, or at least give them a good fight.
